My favorite place in the entire world is Whidbey Island in Washington. I'm not sure if it's because that's where my grandparents live, or if it's because we spent every summer there as kids, or if it's because family agate hunting trips make for the most enjoyable memories. I think it's a little bit of all of it.
Daniel and I visited Washington over Labor Day weekend and stayed a couple days on Whidbey and a couple days in Seattle. Typically on our vacations, I take a ton of photos—and this time I only took about 15! I think last year I ended up with at least ten times that many. This trip, I focused on making a video diary of our time spent there, so stay tuned for that next week. You can see photos from last year's Washington trip here: Whidbey Island, Maxwelton Beach, the 4th of July, Pike Place Market, and Seattle.
Here are some of the few photos from our trip, all of which were from our days spent on Whidbey. Sadly, I don't have any Seattle photos this year. Bummer!
After all of my raving about Ivars' clam chowder and soft serve swirl cones, Daniel knew he had to try both out while we waited to board the ferry over to Whidbey. Ivars, you have a new fan!
Nanny and Papa—my grandparents (on my mom's side)—and lights of my life!
Exploring Maxwelton Beach.
The beach house my grandparents used to live in. It's so classic and brings back the best memories.
Daniel was all about the tide flats and catching crabs.
A small, glowing agate. We found three one day and ten the next—we will be showing them off in the video to come.
We stumbled upon this beautiful piece of beach art.
Honestly, they're so cool. I love my grandparents so much!
On the Mukilteo Ferry heading to Seattle.
This trip was so much fun. I got to spend some quality time with my sister, go for two long (like 4 hours!) and perfect-weather beach walks, work out at the country club's gym each day, got to go for an early-morning run with my mom, and got to eat the most heavenly slice of pizza ever created at Village Pizzeria in Langley. No trip to Whidbey is complete without stopping at the Village Pizzeria for a slice of pesto and finishing it off with a little shopping at the Star Store!
You can also watch a video diary of our entire trip—complete with family, beach walks, agates, games, sights of Washington, delicious food, laughter and so much love. These trips always make me wonder—why do we only go once a year? My new mission is to change that!

Aw! So much Fun! I love your family time trips!
And the wee crab Daniel is holding! SO COOL!
I can't wait to see your video diary! And I love that you have this tradition - looks like a beautiful place!
Also, you have one handsome husband ;)
My sister lived there for years and just moved back to Vancouver. But it's a lovely place although not much to do however it is an island but not too bad for quiet living.
Absolutely STUNNING.
Isn't he fun! He was catching all sorts of crabs. I think this was the biggest (yet still little) one he caught.
THANK YOU! I'm sure he loved your comment just as much as I do! (he probably saw it before I did!)
Agreed--if you're not into the rocky, seaweed beach there's truly not much to do. But I think that's another reason I like it so much. It's incredibly relaxing! To live there though? That would be hard (maybe). :) Vancouver's lovely too. Hope your sis likes it!
Thank you, Krysten!! I agree!
I grew up in Olympia and rarely ventured North, but whenever it did, I remember how serene and peaceful it could be. I moved as soon as I graduated from college and I miss Washington every single day. Definitely hoping to make this our permanent home, when the mister gets out of the Navy. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip and definitely agree, you'll have to come out this way more often ;)
We had a quick ferry trip when we were home for a visit last month. Drove from Bothell to Tacoma, then to Gig Harbor for lunch at Tides Tavern, then ice cream at Mora while waiting for the Kingston - Edmonds run, then dinner and boardgames at my brother and sister in law's place in Kenmore. Beautiful! We just don't have beautiful ferry runs here in Oz like good old Washington!
Olympia--I've heard so many good things about it but have never been. I think I'm missing out! And you're right... serene is the exact word for it. I hope you're able to make your way back to WA. It truly is a lovely state!
Kara, that sounds like such a perfect day. Filled with a lot of fun! Those are the best kinds :)
Haha, I'm actually visiting right now and I'm realizing it more and more how much I miss this place! I get excited seeing the leaves change and falling already; I miss having seasons so much!
I can't believe they're changing already! Oh my! They're beginning to change here in Idaho, too, but not as much as in WA! Too soon, huh?
Ugh, I feel like I have had dozens of these moments/experiences and nothing changes. Do I not really want to change? Am I holding something back? I believe in the power of prayer and miracles and the strength given through Christ. But. My pulling is the worst it has ever been. I. WANT. HEALING.
Emily, I believe you can do it! I truly do! Do you have a support system or anyone you can talk to? I'm here for you! You can do it, Emily. You can!
