Running & Fitness Update

Bright running clothes

Do you know my favorite part about running lately? It's the fact that I haven't been running. Honestly. After our last half marathon three weeks ago, and all the injuries I was recovering from due to the full marathon we just ran a little over a month ago, my body has just been in need of a break from the pavement. Plus, when it's 20 degrees in the mornings here in Boise, there's no way you're getting me outside for a little morning jog. No way.

I've been hitting up the gym every single morning and working on lifting and high-intensity interval workouts instead. The change-up has been really nice! Instead of focusing on mileage, I'm working on decreasing my mile time on the treadmill, trying to churn the fastest mile possible—though I'm 100% sure that I'd run a faster mile if I was outside on the road versus in the gym. I've also been working on upping my basic fitness standards by focusing on push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and general weight lifting.

I didn't think that the change would affect me too much, but I have noticed that I can't eat absolutely everything in sight anymore. Well, scratch that—sure I can—I just can't eat quite as much as I was before. I have noticed a slight gain on the scale (5-6 pounds) but my clothes all still fit the same so let's just go ahead and say I'm gaining muscle, shall we? That makes me feel better, anyway.

So, not much running these days except for a warm-up on the treadmill in the mornings, putting myself to a test with a mile or mile and a half run, and an occasional sprint interval to finish up my workout. It has felt great and once the weather warms up just a bit I can't wait to get back out on the open road.

What's your training routine like these days? Am I the only one who feels like a normal—though fast—running pace on the road (say a 7:00-minute mile) feels like an absolute sprint on a treadmill?

Have you cut your hair again since you did it the first time? It looks lovely. :)

Also, I am currently obsessed with all things animal print. Love the scarf!!!

It's totally muscle. I found when I was doing interval training (I did Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30), the scale did not budge down at all, but either up or stayed the same. I did find I felt stronger though and definiteiyl toned up a bit. :)

PS, I agree, a 7 minute mile outside feels like a sprint on the treadmill! I just can't keep up, though 7 minutes is super fast for me. I'm not a cheetah, like you. :)

I'm going with muscle mass as well! Which in the end is a good thing I hear. You'll be stronger and LEANER... but the poundage may be a little higher.

Race is 2 days from now.. so I've been training, but lightly... I had to slow down my speed on the treadmill... I know that I will run faster outside anyway.

But, good news, my foot/ankle, seems to be rebounding... Tomorrow I have a post scheduled about how my dad loves me.. because he bought me cold weather running stuff.

And one day.. I would love to be at a 7 minute mile.. but for now, I'll keep it in the 10-11 minute range.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving Aunie!

I have been lazy and gaining weight but it's not really my fault. My foot is injured and I am trying my best to walk but it hurts so much. Luckily I go to the foot doctor next Thursday. I can't wait to get it fit so I can start walking/running and working out. I guess I could do upper body work out though....

Yes! I HATE treadmill running! My pace slows down on the treadmill and it feels so much harder. I love running outside. The scenery and fresh air are so invigorating. I plan to do some interval training this winter as well.

I agree with the treadmill! And when I'm actually running fast on a treadmill I feel like I am running a million miles an hour and am going to fall off. Awesome. Down here in AZ we're just hitting peak running season. Finally!

My workouts have been pretty sporadic lately since I've been so busy! I hate saying that, since it sounds like an excuse, but I really do miss my ME time. ;) I exercise in the afternoons when my younger siblings are napping, but since that's my only completely free time I have, I often have to work on other projects. :( I did manage to run my very first straight mile two weeks ago though! My time was 9:32, and I thought I was going to DIE. Makes me wonder what I would feel like doing a 7:00 mile.

As I puffed and panted my way around the oval chamber of death (aka, The Track), I thought of you running 26 MILES! How did you survive? :)

I completely agree with the whole NO MORNING JOG thing. :) My bed is waaay nicer then pavement...

Oh, and It's definitely all muscle. :)

Jaraka, you're a genius!! Tying two scarves together? Why didn't I think of that!> You're awesome!

Thanks Emily, that's like the best compliment/question you could give/ask! I use Aveda's volumizing shampoo and conditioner, and then spray on their volumizing tonic spray to my roots. I typically just let it air-dry but on that day, I blow dried it under with a round brush and then teased the crown a bit :)

Thanks Aspen! Would you believe it's just at a little center park in our neighborhood?

Thanks so much, Cassie!!!! I'll take snow anyday, but sleet? Ugh, no thanks! :)

Haha, how cold is really cold? :)

Yes... About 6 weeks after my first cut, I went very, very short. Like Carey Mulligan short. And it has since grown back out almost to the original cut length--finally! :)

Aw, you're sweet. I'm not a cheetah... I just enjoy pushing myself to the limit! :)

So encouraged to hear about your amazing race. You're a rockstar!!

There's always crunches and pushups while you're watching tv commercials or something :) hoping all goes well at the doc so you can be "back on your feet" soon!!

I agree! You can't beat the scenery and fresh air. Even if it's chilly, it makes it all worth it :)

Sounds so lovely. I bet AZ is just wonderful this time of year! Makes me want to come for a visit.

I agree about the lifting! I am always able to run stronger and faster when I'm lifting regularly than without weights. And glad I'm not the only one with the treadmill. It's so much easier to run outside :)

You're sweet :) Great job on your mile... anything in the 9's is just awesome! And honestly, I ran about 2 miles yesterday and I don't even know how we did a whole marathon. It feels like ages ago. But once you're training like that and you do it all the time, it just becomes second nature. I'm so glad it's over for now, though. Sheesh!

I have been doing a few of those and they have been kicking my butt! Ouch. Guess I am really out of shape. I so can't wait to get my foot better, especially since I might be taking Dance Class.

Cody Doll said...

Well not as cold as ya'll cold =P but it's a wet cold down here and it gets about 40s. Doesn't sound bad but it is to Floridians.

Annelise Rowe said...

Haha, anything under 70 is cold for me!

Totally understand that. That's why I say it gets really cold in Feb. Which is my birth month. Blah.

No, you are not the only one who thinks it's far easier to run on the road than a treadmill. I listen to my body and increase at my comfort level. That is sooo challenging for me on a treadmill. I pretty much hate treadmills, but I use one during the winter mainly because it's so dark and I don't live in the best area, so running in the dark alone is NOT happening. I'd be a paranoid mess.
I too am switching things up a bit. I just started doing a medicine ball workout and Jillian Michael's 30 Day shred. I haven't done much for a month or so and while parts of my body are happy to have a break, other parts are in need of a challenge. Back to morning workout routine.
Good luck! A few pounds on you are nothing! You look fabulous!

Great outfit! I love the pop of color!
(And yes, I always wondered and even asked once about your scarf!)

Annelise Rowe said...

You're so sweet, Sarah! Thanks! And I've heard nothing but good things about those Jillian Michaels DVDs. She's a pro!

Annelise Rowe said...

Oh no, did I miss you asking about it!? I'm sorry if I did... shoot!

where do you get your boot socks?

Good question... I never remember! These ones were a free gift from a consignment store, but typically I go to Gordman's, Target or Kohl's ":)
