We Ran a Marathon, May as Well Run a Half Marathon, Right?
We may have just finished a marathon, and call us crazy, but we signed up for a half marathon in two weeks on November 2. Boise's "long race" season (half marathons & up) is about to come to a close, so we couldn't miss one of our favorite half marathons in the area. It's called Zeitgeist, and it runs from Garden City up to Hidden Springs, and up and down several of the surrounding Boise foothills. The course is on pavement and dirt roads, and it's best known for it's elevation changes and scenic valley views.
We ran Zeitgeist back in 2009 and finished with a time of 2:02. I was recovering from a nasty case of the flu virus, so it wasn't our best time, and we're excited to run it this year to see how much we can improve. If we can hold a pace faster than that for an entire marathon (which we did, since we finished in 4:03), we know we can run faster for a half.
It was actually pretty funny—Mom and I got the Zeitgeist email reminder at the same time just a couple days before our marathon. She emailed me "Let's do it!" just as I was leaving her a voicemail asking if she was up to do it with me. As soon as we heard/saw each other's messages, we signed right up!
Considering that I'm not actually able to walk without pain yet, I know that I'll probably be feeling it this and next week during the last bit of training, but I'm just excited to round out the year with one more big race under my feet. Here we go again...

I half will be NOTHING after your marathon. You're a beast, Aunie! :)
Awww :) love how yall contacted each other at the same time!
epson salt baths and and lots of stretching! :) You've got this - holy cow, it will be like a sprint compared to a full marathon I bet! hahaha
I need to get some new shoes and lace up...all your running talk has me kind of guilty I haven't had any pavement time...
That is awesome! Looking forward to training posts/race pics when the time comes! How awesome that you and your mother can share this!
You are out of control! After my marathon, I didn't walk for three days and only after sports massages, and I did not run more than 6 miles in two weeks after haha. I bow my head to you!
PS: I need that long sleeve!
Sigh. Sometimes I wish I could be a runner. Then my knees remind me why I'm not. P.s you live in ID? I live in WA! Yay, PacNW :)
That is awesome that you race with your Mom - I'm hoping one day my daughter (who is 18) will get the racing bug and go with me!
That is crazy and awesome!

Aunie, still curious, what headphones have you and your mom found to be best for running? I appreciated your advice about many other aspects of running, and I'd like to know your experience on this one too. Thanks so much.
Oh well of course I'll be spamming your blog post feed with updates... you know how I do :)
So good!!! I know, it is funny what it does to you. I found a full marathon in Seattle in December and I want to do it so badly! I'm trying to convince Daniel to road trip it with me :) PS> Good for you! The end of November will be here before you know it.
That's what I feel like! Thanks Shannon... can't wait to totally smash it :)
We are pretty much identical :) Always.
Epson Salts... everyone keeps raving about those! I need to go pick some up!!
And get yourself out there... you know you'll love it :)
OK good, glad you won't be like, "OH no not another one!!" :)
Ha! I don't think I walked for three days either... I ran today for the first time and MAN it was a killer. I hope I'm feeling better in two weeks when the race comes! As for the shirt, it's this one: http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12463178&cp=3077569.3079702.2806307.10787663&fbc=1&f=Brand%2F15354%2F&fbn=Brand%7CUnder+Armour&lmdn=Brand&parentPage=family
Kristine, sometimes I wish I didn't love running so much... my knees hate me for it, too! And yes! I live in Idaho... my sister lives in Seattle and the rest of my family lives on Whidbey Island :)
That would be so fun! You never know what can happen if you suggest it... maybe email her my post? You just never know :)
Whoops! Sorry, took too many days to respond to your other comment. If you don't see the other one that I left you, they're Nike Flight headphones. Not sure if Nike makes them anymore, but I got a refurbished pair from Ebay for about $20. Some sites sell them for about $50 which is crazy... find ones around $20 :)
It's very old lady, but darn if it doesn't work! I also like this essential oil, I think it's called Deep Blue?? It's from DoTerra. Anywho - a little hippie, but better than popping advil like candy all of the time!
You are right...I need to get out there. Love it? Nah...it has never been a love affair. I just like how my legs look after I've been running for awhile! Purely a vainity thing! :)
Thanks! I love it, it is soo bright. I run a lot in the dark during the fall and winter, this will prevent me from getting run over!
Good luck with that race .. I am running a half on October 27, it has been 7 months since the full marathon!
Oh my gosh, you ladies make me tired. I wish I could be up for a half-marathon after a marathon, but I'm barely up for walking after a half-marathon! Best wishes for a successful race!
thanks so much!
You ladies are unstoppable!
And see, I'm terrible... I DISLIKE how my legs look after running. I prefer my legs after weeks in the gym :)
You're gonna rock it... can't wait to hear how you do! And I know what you mean about running in the dark. I run at 5 in the morning a couple days a week, and it's SO DARK. That thing is radiant!
Shoot, we signed up for the half a week before the marathon. If I'd have known how much my body was going to be hurting (still) I don't know if I'd have done it! :)
You're welcome. Hope you can find some affordable ones :)
You're so sweet! Ha... and I definitely was stopped COMPLETELY for days after the marathon. I could barely walk!
The marathon was the practice for the half, it'll be a breeze for the half! haha... My hubster is always saying to me, "let's to the half marathon and then we'll be ready for the marathon in 3 weeks!" I say, "oh yes, that would be so romantic as well", haha! So happy and proud for you and your mom! xo
Thank you so much! Looking back now, I think we were crazy for signing up for the half. We're both still feeling it! :)
