This last Friday, Daniel and I went to the Idaho Botanical Gardens for a "Movie in the Garden." It was the first showing of the season, and I'm pretty certain we picked the best movie... The Sandlot. I haven't seen that movie in ages, and it was honestly more funny this time around than when I was a kid. I love those movies that are made for kids but really they're for adults. They just don't make movies like The Sandlot these days.
The Idaho Botanical Gardens show these movies every other Friday from July through September. Some of the other movies they're showing this year include Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, and The Princess Bride. I want to go to all of them!
The scene in the park is really neat. The Idaho Botanical Gardens are nestled right along the Boise Foothills at the old Idaho Penitentiary so it's very picturesque. There are a bunch of people who sprawl out on blankets and sit under the stars for a movie. The Gardens open at 7 so you can come as early as you'd like, and when we showed up there were kids playing in the grassy fields, a bunch of people tossing a football, and tons of people sipping beverages and relaxing as the sun went down. We grabbed caesar salads, cookies and Milk Duds from the local caterer, but you can also bring any kind of food and beverage you like—they call it "picnic style." The movie began promptly at dusk, and as the final beams of light faded, the laughter to The Sandlot began.
See photos of the Idaho Botanical Gardens Movie in the Garden below, and—attention Idaho friends—make sure to go all the way to the bottom to win a pair of tickets for yourself!

We had a beautiful view of Table Rock from our blanket.
Waiting for the show to start!
Lesson learned: the family in front of us gave their iPad to their little boy right as the movie started and he watched Dora The Explorer with the screen on full brightness and full audio during the entire movie. It was very distracting—not only to us, but the entire crowd behind us—so if you have little kiddos and go to an event like this—leave the electronics at home!
Now, for my Idaho friends (or anyone who wants to come for a visit!), if YOU want to win a FREE pair of tickets to go to one of IBG's Movies in the Garden, all you need to do is leave a comment below! If you comment as a guest, make sure to leave your email so I can contact you if you win! I'll be picking a winner on Sunday, July 21. Good luck!
UPDATE // Winner: Andi!

I agree with you, they don't make wholesome movies like The Sandlot anymore. What a classic! This looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing!
I'd love to check this out! Movies in the Garden sounds like a great time in Boise!
This was a great write up on the Garden event. Thanks! I would love to bring my boys to a movie there.
My 7 and 9 year old saw the movie for the first time Friday night and we all had a great time. Beautiful night, wonderful company and an all-time great movie!!
So fun! I've been meaning to go ... would love to win tickets! :)
I need to do a better job of keeping up with events around Boise. I had no clue they did movies in the Botanocal Garden. It makes such a beautiful setting for a date night and you can't go wrong with a movie like The Sandlot. Can you believe Jason has never seen it!?
Awesome!! We have a drive in movie theater about 45 minutes away & we are wanting to go so bad! A local winery just started hosting a movie night one Saturday night, each month during the Summer! We haven't been able to go. Can't believe they brought their iPad!! Crazy! Oh, and we have a place called 'Table Rock' too!
Sounds like a lot of fun!
Thanks Shannon! It's funny looking and comparing a movie like this to something like ... Twilight or the like. They're SO FAR OFF... The Sandlot is truly an American classic!
Thanks for entering Kylie! Crossing my fingers for you :)
Well good luck, Stacie! Thank you for entering & for your nice comment!! :)
It was really fun running into you there... totally didn't expect that! Good luck, Miss Teri! :)
Well now's the perfect time! Thanks for entering, Maria! If you win, you'll have to take your daughter... she would LOVE the movies they're playing this year!
Excuse me... he's never seen The Sandlot? Forget the event, let's just double date at our house and watch it! :) Oh, and got your entry... thanks Andi! :)
Oh a movie at a winery sounds really fun! My sister would love that :) Oh, and I know about the iPad! It was something I hadn't expected... and how do you handle that? I didn't want to be rude. Oh well!
Thanks Edward! You're all entered so good luck!
I haven't seen the Sandlot in forever. Loved that movie when it came out. Love outdoor movies but always need to bring protection from the mosquitoes where we live!
OH, same here... it just isn't that far into the season yet so we didn't have to worry about it. Come August, however... watch out!
This is SO cool! I wish we had someplace by us do this! And classic movies from my childhood.. I'd be so happy!
And as for the little kid with the iPad...UGH! If they had the presence of mind to bring the iPad.. they should have brought some headphones too.
Hopefully your next cinematic experience is Dora Free! Que No?

Ironic that they took their child to a children's movie...and yet...let him watch a cartoon?? Common people! I remember when I went out with my parents, the only thing I was allowed to bring (that is if my parents let me) was a book. I was expected to either participate in the conversation or read. Other then that the movie in the park looks so much fun! I'm going to look up if there are any in my area!
I haven't seen it either.....
Espero que si!! :) Ha! Honestly, if they would have tossed a blanket over him so he could be by himself and given him headphones, it wouldn't have been so bad. But he was stir-crazy and waving that thing all over the place. Hilarious, now that I'm looking back!
It was awesome... and I thought that was funny, too! I mean, it's a KIDS movie! Maybe they didn't want him to get scared of The Beast, but hey, who knows? I sure learned a lesson & I won't be doing that when I have kids.
MUST WATCH, MUST WATCH!
It's on my list, along with a bazillion others.
I love it! Thanks for sharing. This is something I never knew about. :0)
Well I would love to see you there sometime! Got you entered pretty lady!
This is the best. I didn't know that we had this! I would love to go when they play Jurassic Park, it's one of my favorite movies!
Perfect! I entered you and wish you the best of luck, Jess! I REALLY wanted to go for Jurassic Park, too. That was my #1 choice, but we will be in McCall :( Boo!
FUN! I've always wanted to go to something like this!
This sounds great and looks gorgeous!

What great pics Annelise!! But I'm jealous of your SUMMER weather over there. It's cold in Sydney today.
I LOVE outside movies! Such a lovely night!
Wish they had something like that near me--it sounds so awesome! (Minus the kid with the iPad, natch.)
Such great fun watching movies in the garden. Looking forward to Jurassic Park!
We went last week and it was so much fun! Can't wait to go to the next one.
Oh my goodness these are fantastic pictures! I am moving away to Japan in two weeks and have loved my experience in idaho! All of these fantastic little events Boise puts on has made this a fun adventure. Cannot wait to come see the next show.
I know! That's the one I really wanted to see, too!
So cool! Wasn't the Sandlot great? Good luck in winning tickets!
You'll be in town for one last one! And Japan? Wow... for what? Good for you!
