About a year ago, I made a post called Curl Your Hair Without Heat about how to curl your hair with a headband after watching a video on YouTube. It has since turned into my most-viewed post and has generated a ton of emails from readers who want to know exactly how to do it.
Today, I bring you my very own video tutorial for what I like to call the "Friar Tuck."
More details:
- I have fine hair—and a lot of it. It holds curl well.
- This curling method does not work if your hair is wet. It must be completely dry.
- If your hair falls out of this easily, try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf before going to sleep.
- If you have long hair, try using two headbands to reduce tangles & make it easier to tuck!
- Dry shampoo used for 2nd day oil absorption & extra volume: Suave
- Sea salt spray used: Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Spray
- Songs in the video: (1) 1234 by Feist (2) New Soul by Yael Naim
- The photos below show my hair after an entire day. Some days the curls don't last quite as long.

Love it! I've tried it once before and it didn't work out well for me... I think i just have way too much hair and it takes onto 'bends' too easily so they don't look like soft curls. ;) Yours look great! I may have to try it again.
Looks soooo good!! Another video score for Aunie :)
:) this vid' is just perfect for all of us who likes to change their Natural haircare routine for curly hair:)! You Look just soooo pretty there:)
Bye,
NIKA
This is my favorite way to curl my hair! I've discovered it will curl even after half an hour...I don't need to sleep on it the entire night for it to work!

I've always used the really thin headband but am definitely going to try it with the thicker one! Thanks for this!
great video, i love this! I am definitely going to try :)
Love it! I feel like it'd be great if you did the friar tuck part for work, but maybe paying a little bit more attention to how put together it looked and then shook it out to have awesome curls at night too!
loved it! I will try it soon! No more heat styling for me!
I've done that! Look... wore it to work here: http://www.auniesauce.com/2012/06/nothin-shabby-about-that.html and even styled it similarly here: http://www.byebyebeehive.com/2011/12/holiday-updo.html
Wow this is gorgeous! I have to try!

Okay. So I've tried this with all sorts of different bands & for totally different periods of time. My hair just gets kinky. It is so upsetting because I would do this every night! Oh well. It works great with you!
I saw the Friar Tuck from the original video you posted and found it so interesting. It didn't work at the time since my thin long hair disagreed with it but I have to try it again now that my hair is shorter. I'll let you know it if work out this time!
Kindness is the best accessory,
Rebecca
This is such a great idea!! Thanks for the tutorial :)

Aw, brilliant! :D I'm new to your blog and a couple of months ago banished myself from using heat on my hair since I want it to get healthy and grow. I can never really get curls without heat but this I haven't tried yet - I'll be doing it first thing tomorrow now! Thank you :D

Such a great tutorial! I've always wondered exactly how you do that, I am definitely gonna try it now!
perfectly priya
You know, I have really fine hair and it tends to hold curl really easily. I also find this works best if my hair isn't just-washed. It makes the curls softer!
And to think, YOUUUUU are the one who showed me this over a year ago! Love you, Kristen!
You're so right! Depending on the curl you want, you can totally leave it in for just a short bit! I bet putting a blow dryer on it for a minute would speed up the process, too!
Atta girl! I did it for 365-days... and I still hardly use heat! So proud of you!
LOVE this! I need to try it! tonight how about :)

My hair never holds a curl well, so I'm curious to see how this will work! If I can find a headband I'm going to try this tonight!
This is the greatest thing ever!! Thanks for this!! XO

wow, it's so easy. in the beginning of the video i was like "how is she going to wrap little parts of hair around the band?" but then i saw you just keep adding hair to the parting... nice and easy! it looks great. awesome job with the video.

YES! thank you ! You are gorgeous by the way. I have tried this and it worked with a thin headband but then i had a huge line across my head. Also I didn't part the way you did... and now I know the better way. Perfect video. Those are two of my favorite songs too!

I love this!
love love love this! im going to try it tonight :)
I can't wait to try this! I've seen it before, but never took the time to watch a video to see how it was done. So excited to try something new. My hair isn't great for holding curls, but it's certainly worth a shot. Just wondering, what does the dry shampoo do for the style? I know I'd never find a bottle of that here in Costa Rica, but would love to try the tuck anyway.
I want to try this but I'm not sure how easy it would be since I have so many layers! You make it look so easy! :)
Great tutorial! Looks great! I sadly already have SUPER curly hair :)

Whaaa-- Omigosh, totally trying this. I have stick straight fine hair, got some dry shampoo just sitting in my bathroom waiting for a friar tuck.
Great tip! It came out gorgeous.

Oh no! That's a bummer! And your hair is always dry? Next Q: what kind of hair texture do you have? I find my hair is a LOT more wavy than super-curly if it's not first-day hair.
So exciting! I hope it worked for you!
I agree with you on the long hair part... it works a lot better on my hair when it's between shoulder and mid-chest level. It has been getting tangled a lot more now that my hair is longer.
thank you so much! so happy it was complete and answered your Q's :) take care!
thank you so much! i always got the band mark across my forehead too :) ha!
Hey! It does absolutely NOTHING for the style :) I just have really greasy hair so I needed it to take some of that away, even though I had washed it the day before :) It's my daily little thing I use... it also gives me a bit more "oomph" and volume without having to tease it. My hair is so flat! :) Hope that helps!
One time I did two headbands! One for my shorter hair, one for the longer. It didn't stay in as well overnight, but if you wrapped your head in a scarf I bet it would work!
And all the straight-haired girls go... 'LUCKY!!!' :) God gave all our friends the hair we want so we get to look at it all day and go "ooh" :) I would love your curly hair!
I've seen people straighten it first and then try... but I'm just jealous of your natural curl!
Hehe! If your hair gets at all greasy like mine does after one day, it will be a huge help!
you're welcome! you could even just keep it up in the tuck and wear it like that, i think it could totally work :)
How on EARTH have I missed this method to curl hair??? Amazing! I can't wait to try it:)
Super cute and easy! Following from Aloha Friday :)
Doing it with wet hair does work, at least for me. But it produces a much tighter curl, rather than a gentle, relaxed looking curl. Works really well when I'm feeling lazy and am looking for quick volume with little effort. I throw it up in a clip and get tons of compliments. I enjoy it because it's the only thing I know how to do with my newly long hair, ha ha ha!
It's always super dry when I do it. I think it's my texture. I have super super super fine but I have a ton of it. Weird, huh? It won't tease, either. I should try it on day 2 hair, but to be honest that doesn't happen very often cause I shower each time I workout. I'll do it this weekend and let you know how day 2 curls work out. :)
You'll have to let me know if your hair likes it... I bet your hair would be so lovely curled this way!
happy to have you! welcome :)
You're so lucky that it will dry for you! I could see myself tucking my hair when it's wet or damp if I plan on wearing it like that, but while I sleep it just refuses to dry. Lucky girl! :)
OK good! Let me know how it goes. I have a hard time getting 2 or 3-day hair too with going to the gym... so I understand your pain!
I do it wet with curl creme like 4-5 hours before bed, Then run a low speed hair dryer over it before I sleep and then sleep 8 hours. Just extra time to dry. Mine does a more tight curl as well.. I should try it dry one time :)
That's a great way to get *beautiful *curls! I love it as an alternative to the beachy ones!
Your hair looks gorgeous! I wish I could do this to my hair but my natural curl takes over and it's not pretty. lol

Whenever i try this it turns out looking like an afro :( i'll try it loose, dry, wet, tight, but it never works and another problem i have is whenever i do this to my hair, i never have any room in the back of my head to put my remaining strands of hair so i end up with either an afro, or tangled ends which take me about 20 minutes to get out of my hair.. :(
same happens to me!!! I need help :(
I have another way to do this with two headbands. look at this photo... does that help? http://instagram.com/p/WAXoFiCy6C/ because i tend to run out of room too!
try this... if you're a visual person ;) http://instagram.com/p/WAXoFiCy6C/because i tend to run out of room too!
Okay 1st you are so gorgeous!!! 2nd this works really good on my hair!!! It's so damaged because I use heat ALOT I love this alternative way!!!
Why do you use try shampoo? What is the purpose of it? And you're very pretty and love the idea! :)
Megan, thank you so much!! You are very sweet.
I use dry shampoo to help freshen up my hair a bit. I have pretty naturally oily hair, and it seems to get oily so quickly after a shower. If I shower one day and Friar Tuck my hair that evening, the next morning it always feels gross to me, so I use the dry shampoo to absorb the oil and make it feel more freshly washed. Also, for some reason, dry shampoo seems to give my hair a little more volume, so I use it to lessen the amount I have to tease my hair. I hope that makes sense!

I'm so happy to hear this! Yay! That's why I started doing it too... all the heat damage. And thank you!
This is a really brilliant tutorial. I am always looking for easy, attractive ways to curl hair without too much heat. I have straight hair of which there is quite a lot but the individual hairs are very fine and hate to stay in place. It is also just at shoulder length so I struggled at first trying this, but then divided my hair into a top section and a bottom section and used a separate band for each. It also looks quite pretty as a 'double roll' and would be wearable if I hadn't made the bands out of old tights... hope this helps anyone who was struggling to fit it all in.
Thanks Jocie! That's wonderful... I also loved this style when my hair was more around your length, and doing the double band method is the only way that I can do it to my hair now that it's longer. I should try doing it with tights... I bet that works wonders. So glad I could help you out!
That is magical.
Hey thanks, Liz! You'll have to let me know if it works for you :)
First time I tried this, I was almost done but then I had to take out the headband and start all over and I found that even after like ten min of my hair being in this friar tuck it was already starting to curl wonderfully!!!! But I have a question, have u had any discomfort the next day from the elasticity of the headband? I'm worried my headbands are too tight and will cause discomfort the next day.
Thanks Olivia! I love how it starts curling right away, isn't that crazy? My headbands are usually old ones and pretty loose, so I've never had a problem with them being too tight, but if yours is--maybe try grabbing an older & more broken-in one. :)
Are you even wearing makeup in the pictures? You look so pretty, and i love no heat alternatives i was amazed with this video=)
You're so sweet, thanks! I'm wearing a little bit of blush, eyeliner and mascara.. so yes!
This was pretty cool. My friend showed it to me and we had a sleepover and tried it out. It's awesome!
How fun! Did you guys feel like Friar Tucks when you finished? I think the final product is such an interesting look :)
I have EXACTLY your length/texture hair, straight as a pin, and I've never been able to keep curls in with heat. Giving this a go tonight! Fantastic tutorial!
Oh I'm so glad!! Good luck--remember make sure it's all the way dry. You'll have to let me know if it works!
I have a question. Do you have to use sea-salt spray at the beginning, or just air-dried hair with no product put into it?
This is my second night in a row of using the friar tuck--may do it every day! I love how it works! I'll check out the rest of the blog too
what does the dry shampoo do?
Hey Jo! Since I do the Friar Tuck on 2nd day (or 3rd or 4th), it helps get rid of oils and gives my hair more body :)
This is such an amazing idea! Is that alright if i try it with totally wet hair? You're so gorgeous by the way!
Natalie, thanks so much, you're very sweet!! If you do it with wet hair, it won't dry overnight. You could do it with wet hair if you wanted to wear the style for a day before letting it out... but just overnight it won't dry :( It's best to do it with completely dry hair :)
Thank you so much for this!! My hair never holds a curl and I tried this last night and it was still full of curls even after a whole day of work! I do have a comment about the wet hair tip. I have fine hair that is just past my shoulders. I did mine wet and it dried fine, but it may not as it grows longer. I actually think it being wet helped hold the curl. I can't stop telling people about your video!
