Proof & Pickles

Glasses: c/o Proof // Top: c/o Kintage // Bow: c/o Aidie's Hideaway // Earrings: Macy's // Necklace: Premier Design

It's Monday, and I have something to confess.

This may sound really silly, but up until yesterday, I thought pickles were their own vegetable.
I thought a pickle was a pickle. Grown on a vine, picked, preserved, and then eaten...
not a cucumber made into a "pickle" by the pickling process.
A pickled cucumber, if you will.
After 26-years, you'd think someone would have told me this valuable information [ahem, Mom & Dad], and yesterday I flushed with embarrassment at lunch when I found out that pickles were nothing more than fermented and aged cucumbers.
Daniel looked at me with a classic, "What did I get myself into?" expression, and it felt like a true Jessica Simpson "chicken of the sea" moment...
and now that I've told you, if you're new to The Sauce—please don't scatter.
I promise I'm not always this dense... or am I? Dangit.

On a completely unrelated side note, the glasses above are from a local Idaho company called Proof, and not only do they make high-quality wooden glasses, but their family business is a pretty cool one that I'd recommend to anyone.
I can't wait until the weather warms up a bit so I can rock these turquoise sunglasses around Boise!

// Am I the only one who didn't know what pickles were? Do you pickle things? I'd love to try a deep-fried pickle! Do they even do that? ... Is your brain as scattered as mine lately? Yikes. It must be a Monday.

Oh my gosh, this is hilarious! Don't stress it, we ALL have those moments!
My sister didn't think flamingos were real. And she thought there were two Russias for a while because of how they'd split Russia up on maps.

I've had a lot of those moments but for the life of me I can't think of anything specific! Haha.

Hooters!!! Idk what Footers is. Silly iphone!! ;)

don't worry - I thought that pesto was its own leaf until a few years ago. like, I didn't realize that basil had anything to do with pesto. whoops.

Love pickles, Proof and your candid confessions! Omg, you just proved you're human and that at any age, we learn new things :)

heehee! Thanks for sharing! We all have our silly moments. I've canned pickles several times in the past--you're really not too far off, though. There are specific kinds of cucumbers that make better pickles than others, so gardeners will grow pickling cucumbers just to make pickles with!

It's not a fact I've always known, but yes I do know that! However, the fact that the Washington Redskins are in DC and not Washington state... that's something that I did not know until last week! #dumb

Soo, I don't blame you. I love pickles enough to consider them their own group :) I love pickles! have you ever tried other pickled veggies?? Green beans are good and so are cocktail onions...and red onions..YUMMO!

haha You always make me smile! I love me some pickles so I did know about this my entire life. My dad even makes his own pickles sometimes.

Cute glasses, but I love that polka dot shirt way more!

I have tons of moments like that. Example: I thought CD and Compact Dis were two separate things, apparently not. I get alot of those.
Expect for pickles but I come from a southern family where pickling anything is pretty much breed into us. We can let you off the hook.
I love your glasses. If I ever get some extra money I might get me a pair. =]

I find it very unfair that now after reading your post I really want a pickle... and I have none.

This post cued my pickle craving...even worse...my fried pickle craving. Oh, yes ma'am there it absolutely such a thing as fried pickles and they are amazeballs. Dip them in ranch dressing and your tastebuds (and hips) will never be the same!

Deep fried pickles, or pickled willies as I call them (a name at a restaurant I go to actually) are the greatest thing to ever be put in a deep fryer!

LOL! Well, if it makes you feel any better, a few years ago, my boyfriend asked me "so, if the moon is full in arizona, is it full in ohio?" (we were in a long distance relationship for a few years! AND he was 32 at the time...much older and should have known better!). Sometimes we have brain hiccups!

You're not alone! My husband and I had to Google that one a couple years ago. We weren't quite sure what makes a pickle into a pickle. Live and learn right?

Totally went through the same thing once. I used to think that if you turned a corner without putting the indicator on the car would blow up. Blame the parents on that one.
Love the glasses too

LOL this is awesome, and so are these photos - so lovely!!! I have many of those moments. Does Idaho sell pickles at the movie theaters like Utah? I was stumped by that when I moved here... like who chooses to eat a pickle while watching a movie? Snooki. That's who.

OH trust me. I've done worse! LOL

I loved this post. My grandad used to make the most amazing pickled onions when I was a kid so I think I've just known that they were vegetables pickled as we were always in his greenhouse watching him and then he'd show us the stuff he was pickling. Pickles are a big thing in our house and its tradition to have them with Christmas dinner, we have pickled onions, betroot and red cabbage and then picalilli and Branston pickle as well. Love the sun glasses, gorgeous colour!

They DO deep fry pickles... pickling things is kind of a big thing around here (Central PA), Pennsylvania Dutch Heritage... The glasses are cutesie, but THAT SHIRT! Love it!

This? Made my morning even better. I'm definitely laughing but don't feel embarrassed because even though I know cucumbers and pickles are technically the same thing, I've said some really dumb things before so I feel your pain.

You look super pretty in these photos btw!

There is so much to say about this post.

1. Those glasses are super cute!
2. Love that they are made by a local company!
3. You are hilarious, and need to get your hands on some deep fried pickles ASAP!
4. These photos of you are absolutely GORGEOUS!!! I can't get over it!!

Haha, that is so funny, and honestly, so something I would likely say. I'm a little surprised I knew this one myself! And YES! Fried pickles are oh so yummy. They come in little slices, all fried and hot and crispy. Some places have a sauce that comes with them, but they're also really good in ranch, of course :) Isn't everything?!

ahhh too funny! haha these photos are BEAUTIFUL.

I learned all about pickling recently! I had no idea. I thought pickled okra was pickle flavored okra. Why are people so secretive - a girl needs to know this information! My boyfriend gave me the same look when he had to explain the whole thing to me.

Leona of Oh! Leona. said...

This happens to me all of the time, i'll say something and Liam gives me that all too familiar look as if to say "you've done it again babe..." I feel your pain!

And I thought pickles were just... pickles?

Jennifer M. said...

Lol. I have to admit I think I was pretty old before I realized that pickles were actually cucumbers. It would be less confusing if they actually called them pickled cucumbers. ;P

This summer my mom actually MADE pickels and that was thoroughly fascinating. She got actual dill weed from the farmer's market and then chopped up a cucumber and did whatever you do to make pickles - complete wth putting in the dill plant to let it steep in that. They taste amazing!

gayle said...

That's really endearing! :) I have done that with other things before, I am trying to remember what one of them is . . . For the longest time I didn't understand cranberry sauce, and had no idea what they looked like. I still don't really get how they make the stuff in the can. I'll try to remember some more, but you are SO not alone! :)
