Beauty Tip Wednesday: Bargains Can Be Bad!
Alright, let's be honest here. We ALL love a bargain am I right? I know that a "good deal" can be the difference between my buying a product and not buying one. What can I say? I am thrifty! So I feel inclined to warn you. THIS BARGAIN IS BAD!! I recently found out, the one thing you never want to "go cheap on" is your shampoo and conditioner. Oh the horror I know! I have been using the cheapest/good smelling stuff you can get your hands on, and I will never again settle for cheap!
So lets get into the details. WHY! There are dangers of buying store shampoo and not some from a local hair store, or your hair lady, or as I would say "my hair boy" (shout out to you Britton aka my hair boy) So here we go, the list of bad, bad, and more bad. The truth is, store bought shampoo only cleans the surface of your hair, but does not help the strand itself. Shampoo is very important to your hair, because it nourishes it, and gets the oils off the surface.
Do you know what Sodium Lauryl Sulfate? Well if you do, you know how horrible it is, and will be surprised to know it is one of the main ingredients in the store bought shampoo.Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is used to clean things such as ENGINES. You heard me! The ingredients can also cause cancer, and infertility! I don't know about you, but I have not had kids and I need to hold on to every sacred egg I have. (seriously). The facts are, your hair is not just dead skin cells that hang around. Just like any other part of the body, you have to maintain it, and treat it right! So what do you do from here on out?
The minute (almost second) I heard the news, I made my way to the salon. You see my hair is falling out, no not from balding, not malnutrition, but because to my surprise, I have a sensitive head, and using the harsh stuff found in my shampoos is literally making my hair fall out! You see the oils naturally found on your head are cutting off my circulation to the hair itself, due to the cheap shampoo not getting the job done. Here is what I came out with...
If you are worried about price, DO NOT WORRY I was to! Here is some helpful news, for long hair (like mine) you should only be using about a nickel size of shampoo and conditioner. I do not know about you, but I use to fill my palm! (uh oh, bye bye money!) So less is more with the more expensive brand, and you are treating your body (eggs included) right. Cheers to happy healthy hair.
Personally, I use Nioxin (pictured above) It is fabulous for hair that is thin, or thinning and for hair that has been chemically treated a.k.a colored! I hardly use any and have noticed a huge difference in my hair. IT IS FABULOUS! I also have another little not so secret.
Biotin. It is a great vitamin that I take daily. It not only helps your hair but your nails and skin as well. Biotin, also known as vitamin H or coenzyme R and is necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty acids, and the metabolism of fats and amino acids. It plays a role in the citric acid cycle, which is the process by which biochemical energy is generated during aerobic respiration. Biotin not only assists in various metabolic reactions, but also helps to transfer carbon dioxide. It may also be helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level. I also use prenatal vitamins!
So whether you are trying to grow your hair long, keep your hair on your head, or just overall aim for better well-being of your hair I suggest making the switch! You will not regret it. I promise!!

I was surprised to learn a lot from her post,
and also surprised to know that I'm doing a couple things right,
like using the high-quality shampoo & conditioners and taking prenatal vitamins.
Check and double check.
And you guys, Caitlyn is so sweet—
she's giving away a package of the Nioxin shampoo and conditioner above!
Is she awesome or what?!

this is great information, thank you!
AH!!! That is the EXACT shampoo I use!!!! I think I need to get some new stuff... eeeeek so scary!
My hair has been falling out too its feels like. It's no longer diet related so this is perfect timing. I'm trying this shampoo for sure!
Eep, ONE DAY!!
I tried using regular after making the tragic mistake of going blonde(ish) over the summer ... on untreated hair you can't really tell the difference, but on hair damaged within an inch of its life? Sulfate is terrible. I definitely learned that the hard way!
Caitlyn is so cool. :)
such good information!
ONE DAY!! I TOLD you it would go by quickly!!!
Ahh! Such a good post! I am going to go buy some biotin now! I hope I win the shampoo, I have such thin hair :(
What great beauty tips. I'm going to try those vitamins. Sounds like they have great benefits.

I knew the sulfate was terrible for certain hair treatments such as chemical straighteners etc, but I have NO idea it was this unhealthy? I am glad I read this.
I read this on another blog. I bought some really good shampoo:)
I love your file picture. I love color splash!

I've been trying to use shampoos without SLS, but have yet to find one I like. I may have to give Nioxin a try!
This information is very useful. I had lots of problems with my hair. Currently I am using Nioxin and it is great. Also I am using Biotin as a supplement. It has good results over hair, nail and skin.
